Overland Trip Across the Plains Rachel Taylor

INTRODUCTION

The following diary was written by a teenage girl: Rachel Taylor, age 15. She was a perceptive, alert young woman who would become a school teacher after arrival in the Oregon Country.

The Rachel Taylor diary was brought to our attention by Mrs. Nevah Clifford, a descendant, of Eagle Point, Oregon, in response to a notice of this publishing project in the Medford, Oregon, Mail-Tribune. In her letter, dated June 18, 1980, Mrs. Clifford said, speaking of the 1853 wagon train:

In this group were my great grand parents, Stephen Phelps Taylor and wife, Abigail Clark Taylor and several of their children including my grand parents, Stephen Clark Taylor and wife, Mary Ann Prescott Taylor. These families with several other wagons came on into Oregon, settling near Roxy Ann Mountains south side, taking up land near the hills as they were farmers and wanted to be near the hills for grazing for cattle.
